The Community Policing Team want residents to look closely at their so why not have a look at some of our hints and tips for security that can be found here. Don’t forget to pass the message on to family and friends to help them to secure their home as well.
Here’s some useful advice, on helping to keep burglars out:
Securing Doors and Windows
Most burglaries are opportunistic, with criminals targeting homes with easy access.
Locking Mechanisms: Fit doors with a five-lever mortice deadlock (to BS 3621 standard) or a Euro Profile Cylinder lock (to TS007 3 star standard). For UPVC doors, ensure they meet PAS024:2016 standards.
Door Accessories: Install a door viewer (peephole) and a door chain to safely check who is at the door. Fit letterboxes with an internal cover plate to prevent thieves from reaching keys.
Window Security: Fit key-operated locks to all downstairs windows and those above a flat roof. Keep window keys out of sight but easily accessible in an emergency.
Make sure you secure your windows before leaving your home or going to bed.
External Buildings: Ensure doors on garages and sheds are solid and fitted with good locks, as they often contain valuable tools that could be used to break into your home. Padlock side gates to control access to the rear of your property.
Making Your Home Look Occupied
Burglars often target empty houses. Create the impression that someone is home, even when you are out.
Lighting: Use automatic timer switches on internal lights (e.g., in a lounge or bedroom) and a radio to simulate activity.
Exterior Deterrents: Install external sensor-activated security lighting at the front and rear of your home. Gravel driveways and paths make it harder for intruders to approach quietly.
Neighbourhood Watch: Get to know your neighbours and ask a trusted person to keep an eye on your home, collect mail, or even park their car on your driveway when you are away.
Social Media: Avoid posting on social media that you are away from home until you return, as criminals can use this information to identify empty properties.
Protecting Valuables
Secure Storage: Store high-value items, identity documents, and car keys out of sight and away from doors and windows. Consider installing a properly fitted home safe for very valuable items.
Marking Property: Mark your valuables with a UV marker pen or a Security DNA marking kit. Register details and serial numbers of items like mobile phones, laptops, and cameras on the free national mobile property register at the Immobilise website - The National Property Register, for Phones, Gadgets, Bicycles & More...
