Online Shopping Fraud |
||
|
As Black Friday, Cyber Monday, and the festive season approach, Greater Manchester Police is urging residents to remain vigilant against online shopping fraud. Fraudsters take advantage of the busy shopping period by creating fake websites, sending fraudulent emails, and advertising counterfeit or non-existent products at heavily discounted prices.
Since April, GMP has received over 1,100 reports of online shopping fraud, with losses exceeding £1.2 million. Common tactics include requests for bank transfers, links in emails or texts leading to bogus sites, and fake social media adverts for high-demand items such as electronics and designer goods.
To protect yourself: Research sellers and offers before making a purchase. Ensure payment pages are secure and use a credit card for added protection. Avoid clicking on suspicious links or scanning QR codes. Keep devices updated and enable two-factor authentication. Be cautious of deals that seem too good to be true. If you suspect fraud: Note the website address and close your browser. Report the incident to Action Fraud and contact your bank immediately. Monitor your bank transactions and act quickly on any unfamiliar activity.
Further advice is available on the Action Fraud website. Stay alert and shop safely this festive season.
