On Friday 21st Nov we received multiple 999 calls regarding a vehicle seen swerving on the road and causing damage. PC Alex Boniface on patrol, sighted the vehicle on Ticknall Road near Scaddows Farm before the calls had been dispatched. The vehicle travelled head on towards the marked police vehicle causing us to take evasive action to prevent a collision.
The vehicle has then failed to stop where during the short pursuit it has almost collided with numerous members of the public’s vehicles. Due to the vehicle now approaching Swadlincote, urgent tactics to stop it were put in place.
As the vehicle travelled through Hartshorne it travelled onto the wrong side of the road and hit a member of the publics vehicle head on, causing extensive damage. The vehicle fled despite attempts to remove the driver by forcing entry into the vehicle.
The vehicle has eventually come to a stop where force was used to remove the driver to prevent him driving off again. Most importantly and thankfully, the female driver and baby in the car that was hit quickly received care from officers and attended hospital as a precaution.
We would like to thank the members of the public that called us to report the incident and finally, we would like to thank the member of the public who stopped to intervene and assist PC Boniface in removing and restraining the driver of the white Range Rover who offered resistance.
Suspecting the driver was heavily under the influence, a breath test was requested however the driver refused to provide.
The driver was arrested for the following:- Fail to stop for police, Dangerous driving, Fail to stop at the scene of a collision and Fail to provide a specimen of breath.
John Phillips, 47 years of High Street, Repton has been charged and bailed to appear at court.
