CRIME ALERT – FROSTY MORNINGS & UNATTENDED CARS

Who likes a nice warm, toasty car on a frosty morning?

That’s right… thieves do!

As temperatures drop, we’re seeing more drivers leaving their cars running on the driveway to defrost while they get ready inside. Unfortunately, this creates the perfect opportunity for opportunistic thieves, who actively look for unattended unlocked vehicles with the keys still in the ignition. Many keyless cars can be driven away if the engine is already running, even if the key fob isn't inside the vehicle. So a thief could jump into a running car and drive away. The car will not magically shut down.

It takes just seconds for someone to jump in and drive off — and in many cases insurance won’t cover the loss if the car was left running unattended.

So please, don’t make it easy for them. Stay with your vehicle while it defrosts, use de-icer or a scraper, and make sure your car is fully secure before walking away.
