Bedfordshire Police is investigating a series of burglaries reported at commercial premises in Leighton Buzzard over the weekend. A number of shops and businesses in and around the High Street were targeted in the early hours of Sunday morning (16 November), with entry gained to Strattons Food Hall, Wilde Flower Boutique, Mister Mitchells Dry Cleaning, Emily’s Nails and Spa, the Willen Hospice shop and New Look. The break-ins took place between 3am and 4am. A quantity of cash was taken from a couple of the stores along with an iPad mini, a charity collection box and some jewellery. An investigation has been launched and community officers are engaging with businesses to provide support and reassurance. Officers will also be carrying out additional patrols in the area over the next few days. Inspector Grant Maxted, who oversees the Leighton Buzzard Community Policing team, said: “It is devastating for many of our local businesses to have been targeted in this way, and sadly some shop owners have incurred the loss of vital funds and assets. “Retail theft is not a victimless crime and burglaries of retail units can have a significant impact on those who work there. A number of those targeted in this crime spree are independent businesses and even a charity shop. “We are exploring a number of lines of enquiry including reviewing CCTV in the area, and would appeal for anyone with their own security cameras or who may have been around the area at the time to come forward. “We understand these incidents will cause concern for local businesses and residents. Our officers are carrying out increased patrols in the town centre and working closely with shop owners to provide crime prevention advice and support. "Tackling burglary and retail crime remains a priority for Bedfordshire Police, and we will continue to do everything possible to bring those responsible to justice.” If you were in the High Street area between 3am and 4am on Sunday morning, or have CCTV, dashcam or doorbell footage or other information that could assist our investigation, please get in touch.
