As the local officer for Hightown Housing, I would like to take this opportunity to share some important crime prevention advice and encourage everyone to work together in keeping our community safe.

Our focus includes tackling acquisitive crime (such as burglary, theft, and vehicle crime) and ensuring the safety and wellbeing of women and girls in public and private spaces. By staying aware, taking simple precautions, and looking out for one another, we can all play a part in preventing crime.

Here are a few key tips:

Keep doors, windows, and vehicles securely locked — even when you’re at home.

Keep main entrance doors closed and secure at all times. Never let strangers tailgate behind you into the building/flat.

Report any suspicious activity or behaviour immediately via 101 or 999 in an emergency.

Report broken gates, locks and doors to the Housing association.

Avoid leaving parcels in shared areas.

Be aware of your surroundings, especially when travelling alone at night.

Ensure communal fire doors are never propped open.

Look out for friends, neighbours, and vulnerable members of the community.

Support others by challenging inappropriate behaviour safely and reporting incidents of harassment or intimidation.

With the change in weather and the drop in temperatures, it is possible that more people are seeking warmth or shelter and may try to access communal areas within the blocks of flats. While its important to remain compassionate, residents should ensure that entrance doors are kept secure and report any concerns to building management or the appropriate support services. This helps keep the building safe while also ensuring that vulnerable individuals can be directed to proper assistance.
