In recent weeks there have been a few incidents of distraction theft at ATMs in the Chingford area. Below are a few simple tips to help protect yourself from being targeted by criminals.

Scan the area around ATMs before using them. Be aware of anyone standing close by.

Always check the machine to see if it has been tampered with before you use it. Look for devices attached to the machine.

Report any unusual activity to the bank or the police.

Be alert…..Be vigilant

Be aware of your surrounding. Do not allow yourself to be distracted.

Thieves will watch as you key in your PIN. Cover your PIN and keep an eye on your card at all times.

If someone taps you on the shoulder or tries to speak to you ignore them.

When you leave the ATM put away your card and cash notes immediately.
