Safety on the roads - Changing weather conditions & reduced lighting |
Winter is approaching which means reduced daylight and poor weather conditions, this has an impact on road users. There are ways that road traffic collisions can be prevented to ensure safety around the changing weather conditions and the reduced lighting.
-if the weather conditions are bad slow down, this will give you more control of your vehicle when driving in poor conditions. -ensure you brake gently to prevent skidding to maintain control of your vehicle. -when accelerating and decelerating ensure this is done slowly. -ensure headlights are on and in working order as it is becoming darker earlier, this will increase visibility for yourself and other road users. -avoid puddles to prevent aquaplaning -check the conditions of your tyres -avoid cruise control as this can interfere with your ability to slow down -create a larger distance with the vehicle in front to ensure you have time to react should you be required to. Remember keep a distance of 4 seconds from the vehicle in front if the conditions are wet. -check your route before leaving, ensure there are no flood warnings for your route -check the weather prior to making the journey, give yourself more time if the weather conditions are poor.
Whilst keeping this in mind you should be aware of the four main causes of road traffic deaths and serious injuries:
