Burglary - Residential |
||
|
Dear Resident,
Since the start of November we have unfortunately seen an increase in Residential Burglary in the area where you live. The majority of offences committed have taken place in early evening hours just after it gets dark, offenders are targeting addresses from the rear of the property, using drain pipes/ladders to access first floor windows before breaking in. Work is ongoing to identify those responsible and bring them to justice, however in the mean time I wanted to provide some prevention tips to hopefully deter offenders from committing offences in the first place. There is a list below of general prevention advice however one thing I wanted to add on is to make sure you are utilising timers/leaving lights on at the rear of the property as well as the front, especially on upper floors. Based on the method offenders are using above, this small measure is likely to deter them away from targeting addresses that appear to have people home when they are approaching from the back of the property, further tips to prevent burglary are:
Check windows and doors are securely locked before you leave or go to bed. Secure UPVC doors by lifting the handle and locking it to engage the security features. Don’t leave keys, phones or other valuables on windowsills or in any other visible place. Securely lock rear gates, sheds and garages. Keep tools and ladders locked away, as they could be used to break into your home. Use laminate glass where possible for any rear doors or windows. If this is not practicable, consider the use of security film over existing windows. Use a “Fake TV” or timer switches on lamps to give the impression someone is at home. Consider using a doorbell camera, interior camera, or a monitored burglar alarm. Consider adding trellis to any side or rear boundaries to add extra height up to a maximum of 2 metres.
Please be vigilant and do report any suspicious activity or behaviour in the area. If you need to report a crime please call 101 or go online here.
