Officers made thousands of shoplifting arrests in the year-period until the end of summer, which is coupled with an increase in solved outcomes.
In the year to September, GMP recorded 3,576 arrests for shoplifting – equating to around 300 a month.
In that same time period, there were 840 fewer shoplifting crimes, with a further 1,400 more solved outcomes for the same offence than last year.
With regards to the broader topic of retail crime (which can include robberies, burglaries, and other crimes), there were more than 1,300 more solved outcomes.
Our continued positive results can also be seen over a longer period of time.
We solved 4,500 more shoplifting offences in the year up to Nov 2024 compared to May 2021, which is when Sir Stephen Watson started in his position as Chief Constable of GMP. This was a staggering 454.9% increase.
