As the nights draw in, it’s a great time to review your home security. Check out our tips below to help keep your property safe. Doors and windows Do not hold doors open for strangers and non-residents. They should have a key to get into the building or can call the person they are visiting to let them in. Ask to see the ID or confirmation paperwork of gas, electric, water, or maintenance workers. Before heading out, always check that your doors and windows are locked and secured. It’s also a good idea to close your blinds or curtains to keep prying eyes out and leave a light on to give the appearance that you are home.
Keys
Keep keys out of sight and away from doors and windows - especially letterboxes or glass panels - where they could be reached or spotted from outside. If possible, store car keys in a signal-blocking pouch to prevent relay theft. Do not take your car keys to bed.
Lights and alarms
As the nights get darker, a low-cost solution to making an empty house look like somebody is at home is to leave a lamp with a low energy light bulb on a timer. Alternatively, you can use timer switches for your lamps or smart bulbs that can be remotely accessed from an app on your phone. If you have an alarm then make sure you use it when you go out and before you go to bed.
CCTV and digital doorbells
Don’t forget to charge your digital doorbells and maintain your personal CCTV systems. It’s easy to overlook, but they’re especially useful as the evenings get darker. Motion sensor lights are also a great way to deter unwanted visitors.
