Staying Safe Around Fireworks this Autumn
Now Halloween is behind us, Guy Fawkes celebrations are here! Bonfire Night and watching firework displays, can be a fun and exciting time for everyone, but it's important to stay safe and be aware of the dangers associated with fireworks. Remember - fireworks can be used in the UK any time from 7am to 11pm. The exceptions are:
Bonfire night: 7am to midnight New Year’s Eve, Diwali and Chinese New Year: 7am to 1am the following day If you are buying or handling fireworks for use at home, take a look at our safety tips:
There are various age restrictions on buying fireworks, depending on what category they fall into. You must be 18+ to buy most fireworks. It is an offence to throw or set off any firework (including sparklers and category 1 fireworks) in or into any highway, street, thoroughfare or public space. Only buy fireworks from reputable retailers and make sure they have the CE mark. Read the instructions on each firework carefully before using it. Light fireworks outdoors and away from people, property, and flammable materials. Always wear eye protection when lighting fireworks. Never hold a firework in your hand when lighting it. Never relight a firework that has failed to go off. Keep a bucket of water or a hose nearby in case of fire. Always supervise children closely and talk to them about the dangers of handling fireworks. Here are some additional safety tips for Bonfire Night: If you are having a bonfire at home, make sure it is in a safe location and that you have a bucket of water or a fire extinguisher nearby. Be aware of your surroundings and avoid walking alone in dark or unfamiliar areas. If you are driving, be extra careful of pedestrians and cyclists. Lock your doors and windows when you leave your home. Keep an eye on your belongings and don't leave them unattended.
If you see someone using fireworks in a dangerous or irresponsible way, call the police on 101, or 999 in an emergency. If you are experiencing antisocial behaviour, such as noise nuisance or criminal damage, also call the police on 101. You can also report antisocial behaviour and fireworks misuse online. You can also email your local police team directly here.
Thefts
A shoplifter who targeted business in ALLESLEY and across the city has been jailed. Over a two-month period, the thief stole thousands of pounds worth of goods and was responsible for a series of thefts. The team worked hard in gathering evidence and securing the charges against him. He was arrested on Tuesday 21st October. Upon appearing at Court he has pleaded guilty to 18 thefts and sentenced to 36 weeks in jail.
We have identified a juvenile for stealing items at a convenience store in COUNDON. This is being dealt with by way of Community Resolution and the youngster is learning his lesson by paying for the items taken. Community resolutions aim to provide a form of justice for a victim and accountability for the offender without formal charges or court proceedings.
Routine stop
On Saturday 1st November, whilst out on ASB patrol in HOLBROOKS, officers spotting a SORN vehicle followed it to a premises. Officers tried to speak to the driver where he decided to make a run for it and a chase pursued. The male was detained but then tried fighting with officers. Class A drugs were thrown during all of this, which thankfully were recovered. The male has been arrested for multiple offences including possession with intent to supply and assaulting an emergency worker. His vehicle has also been seized. An excellent outcome in getting drugs off the streets.
Until next week Stay safe everyone.
