Nitrous Oxide Misuse – Serious Risks |
||
|
We are seeing a concerning rise in the recreational misuse of nitrous oxide (NOS) – commonly known as “balloons” – across our community. This substance, while legal for medical and catering use, is illegal to possess, supply, or use for psychoactive effects under the Psychoactive Substances Act 2016. Nitrous oxide is a gas used in dentistry and catering. When misused, it can cause: Euphoria and dizziness / Loss of coordination / Hallucinations / Unconsciousness or death in extreme cases Regular use can lead to: Brain and nerve damage due to vitamin B12 depletion / Breathing difficulties and heart strain / Psychological dependence / Long-term neurological damage, including paralysis Discarded silver canisters and balloons are being found in parks, streets, and car parks, posing risks to children, pets, and wildlife. Noise and antisocial behaviour: Linked to gatherings where NOS is abused, often late at night. Users have been found driving under the influence, endangering lives. The presence of NOS litter contributes to a sense of neglect and disorder in our neighbourhoods. Your local policing team is actively conducting targeted patrols in known hotspot areas. We will continue seizing NOS canisters and issuing penalties. We are working with schools, youth services, and community groups to raise awarenessa and are engaging with local councils to address environmental clean-up and prevention Possession with intent to supply can lead to up to 7 years in prison. Driving under the influence of NOS can result in disqualification, fines, or imprisonment. Repeat offenders may face criminal behaviour orders (CBOs) and other sanctions If you witness NOS misuse or find discarded canisters: We are committed to protecting our community from the harms of substance misuse. NOS abuse is not harmless it damages health, endangers lives, and degrades our shared environment. Let’s work together to stop it.
