When Can fireworks be used? Fireworks can be used on private property (e.g. your garden) between 7am and 11pm with exemptions for certain dates Bonfire night – Midnight New Years – 1am Diwali – 1am Chinese New Year 1am
Where Can Fireworks Be used? On private land with the owner’s permission. They cannot be set off on streets, in public places, in parks. Even on private land it is illegal to set off fireworks within 50 feet (15.5m) of the centre of a highway. Venues must have a named adult staff member designated as responsible for firework displays. Local Authorities may require prior notifications.
Who Can Have Fireworks? You can only buy or possess adult fireworks if you are 18+, you can only buy or possess Category 2 (Garden Fireworks) or Category 3 (Small display). Only licensed pyrotechnic professionals can buy or possess Category 4 fireworks. Who Can Sell Fireworks? Shops registered with the local authority can sell fireworks 15 Oct – 10 Nov & 26–31 Dec, 3 days before Diwali and Chinese New Year. Year-round sales require an all-year fireworks sales licence. Fire & Rescue & Trading Standards may inspect and enforce retailer compliance.
Firework Nuisance! Repeated or late-night fireworks can be treated as statutory noise nuisance by local councils even if set off during the permitted hours. Fireworks must not exceed 120 decibels at 15 metres. Offenders can be fined up to £5,000 or face 6 months imprisonment.
