Fraudster warning in Selby area |
||
|
Police in Selby have issued a warning to members of the public and businesses following a number of reports of a man convincing people to give him goods or money and a promise that he has transferred the cash to their bank account. The suspect has targeted services such as hairdressers and takeaways, saying he will transfer the money via bank transfer, he then shows the business a screenshot of the money being transferred but when they have checked later on, the money is not there. Earlier this week, a member of the public using a cash machine was asked for money to pay for a taxi. Again the suspect promised to transfer the cash and showed the victim a screenshot of the transfer. However, the money did not go through to the victim’s bank account, and at this point the victim did the right thing and refused to hand over any money. The suspect left empty-handed. Officers are advising people to be vigilant and not to hand any money over to anyone who approaches them, no matter how plausible or genuine they may seem. Please also look out for your older and vulnerable friends and neighbours whose kind and trusting nature may be taken advantage of. If you believe you or someone you know may have been targeted, please get in touch.
