I wanted to update you in respect of the charge of a man for an attempted rape a week ago.
Detectives in Islington have been carrying out an intensive investigation to identify a suspect responsible for an attempted rape which occurred last Tuesday Evening in Gillespie Park near to the Emirates Stadium.
A woman was walking through the park when she was approached by an unknown man, hovering near some bushes, who then attempted to rape her.
An immediate investigation was launched by our Rape & Serious Sexual Offences Team who have been relentless in their pursuit of this individual, working extended shifts through the day and night.
Following those efforts, a man was arrested on Sunday Evening (19 October). This male was charged yesterday evening (Monday 20 October) with attempted rape and sexual assault.
He was remanded in custody and will appear before Westminster Magistrates this morning. The victim continues to be supported by specialist officers.
Through our local Neighbourhood officers and PCSO’s we also ensured additional patrols within the park and the surrounding areas to provide reassurance. It was great to see that the pre-planned family event at the park was able to take place on Sunday Afternoon, really galvanising the community.
Although I am unable to discuss the specific details of the investigation due to upcoming legal proceedings, please do not hesitate to reach out to myself and SLT colleagues around our wider community safety and VAWG strategy.
I hope that this outcome provides reassurance & confidence for our local residents.
I will ensure that the outcome of this investigation is communicated to you.
DCI PAUL RIDLEY
