Weekly Round Up - Stoke & Wyken Neighbourhood Team |
||||
Dear Residents and Local Businesses, here is your weekly update from your local neighbourhood Policing Team, Stoke and Wyken. As per our usual efforts, Officers have continued to patrol and monitor our green spaces, also those areas that generally experience high levels of anti-social behaviour, some of which include Riley Square and Edgwick Park. Green spaces include Caludon Castle Park, Stoke Heath, Barras Heath, The Lindfield & St Margarets Skate Park. Although half term is approaching on Monday the 27th of October until the 31st, Officers have been working together with the traffic wardens during school hours to ensure the safety of the children in our community.
If you have not seen our previous updates, some of these schools include Wyken Croft Primary, Clifford Academy, Caludon Castle and Pearl Hyde, we aim to rotate the areas and schools within the Stoke & Wyken area whenever possible to ensure we are covering the entire area.
Speedwatch operations have been ongoing, we always aim to do this weekly on a number of roads, whether it is community or Police lead – Clifford Bridge Road is due to have a temporary closure this weekend, however we have been busy monitoring this road, along with Belgrave Road, Humber Road and Kynner Way near the Warwickshire Retail Park, if you have any other suggestions and want to take part, please send us a message.
We have given several motorists words of advice regarding their driving standards and will continue to do so and/or give out fines or make arrests if necessary. Remember by working together as a community and actively looking after your area, we can create a better and safer place to live. Your involvement is crucial, and I encourage you to engage with us through the following avenues: Community Speed Watch - Community Speedwatch (CSW) is a community driven road safety initiative which empowers community volunteers to address their concerns around inappropriate traffic speed around their residence/place of work with the support of WMP. Establish a Neighbourhood Watch: Neighbourhood Watch is one of the UK’s largest community crime prevention initiatives. It is not run by the police but has dedicated members of staff working with it. Every Neighbourhood Watch group is different because each is owned and run by the people of its community. Members of the public and their neighbours come together to make their area a safe and pleasant place to live. Groups decide what measures to take because they know what their community needs best. Local groups also draw on support from police, local authorities, fire and rescue services, the voluntary sector and other volunteers. You can find out more about how to get involved at www.ourwatch.org.uk. Consider joining an Independent Advisory Group (IAG): An Independent Advisory Group (IAG) is a self-governing group made up of people from local communities who provide independent advice to the police. Groups reflect the make-up of our communities and members have a connection with a particular community or communities and an understanding of the issues relevant to them. Membership of the group is on a voluntary basis. IAGs cover a geographical area and only policing matters within the policing area will be discussed. To find out more about an IAG in your area, please call 101 and ask to speak to the Consultation and Engagement Officer for your area. Officers this week have had three arrests this week, one of which was for a male who had illegal substances found on him during a stop and search, another for a driving offence in relation to them being over medicated and another for a shoplifter – Officers from the Stoke & Wyken team often work in plain clothes around high crime retail areas in order to arrest our repeat or prolific offenders.
CAN YOU HELP YOUR LOCAL NEIGHBOURHOOD TEAM? · Intelligence is key · Intelligence is anonymous · Intelligence helps us protect and serve our communities Please visit our website to discover the best way for you to report concerns/crimes Live Chat | West Midlands Police (west-midlands.police.uk) Nature watch We have not had any particular sightings this week, however during our patrols we had come across a member of the public, a falconer who had been walking with their Hawk, this was a rather unique sight with lots of interesting conversation to be had, perhaps the influx of recent bird sightings in the Stoke & Wyken area has had an effect on bird enthusiasts.
Above is a Harris Hawk, although not native to the UK they are legal to own with the correct paperwork and welfare standards, they are also not a protected bird. The Harris Hawk belongs to the Accipitridae family (same as Eagles and Buzzards) and was first scientifically described by Louis Jean Pierre Vieillot in 1817, however the founding father Carl Linnaeus still laid the foundation of modern taxonomy in the mid 1700s. Vieillot followed Linnaeus’s classification system and refined it by naming many new world species.
