Police Crack Down on Illegal Fireworks Ahead of Bonfire Night & Diwali |
||
As Bonfire Night and Diwali approach, officers have been receiving an increasing number of complaints from residents about the use of powerful fireworks being set off in the streets and public spaces. These large, commercial-grade fireworks can cause significant distress to local communities, particularly to those with pets, young children, and vulnerable residents.
Many of these fireworks are illicit and not legally available for public sale. They are intended only for licensed public displays due to the dangers they pose when stored or used improperly.
This week, Neighbourhood Policing Officers from Plaistow wards have been working closely with Trading Standards and Licensing Officers to tackle the illegal sale, storage, and use of these dangerous fireworks. Using police powers, officers have seized a large quantity of fireworks to prevent them from being used in upcoming celebrations.
Yesterday alone, officers recovered almost 600 commercial-grade fireworks being stored within residential properties across the borough, posing a serious safety risk to those living nearby.
This proactive operation forms part of our ongoing commitment to keeping residents safe and reducing anti-social behaviour (ASB). Over the coming days and weeks, officers will continue to carry out high-visibility patrols and work closely with local partners to prevent and disrupt firework-related ASB.
We encourage residents to report any concerns about the sale or misuse of fireworks via the Met Police website or by calling 101, and to always dial 999 in an emergency.
Together, we can help ensure everyone enjoys a safe and respectful Bonfire Night and Diwali season. | ||
