Police update on speed checks - Ross

Dear Residents,

PC John TOWNSEND known as “Jonty” has joined the Ross-On-Wye Safer Neighbourhoods Team.   He previously worked as a Response Officer covering Ross-On-Wye and Ledbury prior to joining the Safer Neighbourhood Team at Ross, working mainly in Ross Town. 

PC TOWNSEND enjoys activities related to Roads Policing and is keen to support identified Community Charter Priorities of speeding / road safety.  

PC TOWNEND and PC Ciera HARRIS conducted some community speed checks on 5th October 2025 at Alton Road, Walford Road at Walford Village Hall and Lea.

The results of these checks were overall positive, however it does highlight that vehicles are being driven in excess of the speed limit in place.  Please help us help you by doing your bit when driving, and have an awareness that your behaviour directly contributes to reducing speeding incidents, reducing complaints about speeding, reduces accidents and makes the roads feel safer for other road users.  

The Results are in - 

Walford between 15:55 to 16:15hrs – 30mph zone

26 cars checked, lowest speed 17mph, highest speed 36, average speed 26.4mph. No tickets given on this occasion.  Jonty and Ciera were also about to speak to residents at the time about the checks. 

Lea between 15:12 to 15:33hrs – 30mph zone

32 cars checked, lowest speed 12mph, highest speed 35mph, average speed of 28.2 No tickets given on this occasion.

Alton Road, no timing as Jonty and Ciera were stopped and spoken to by residents at the location! Thank you to those residents that raised concerns about Tractors which are thought to be speeding down the Alton Road throughout the day.
