Dear {FIRST_NAME Following recent reports of Distraction burglar attempts around the area, I wanted to send this message that contains important information and tips to remember to avoid becoming a victim of a Distraction Burglary. Distraction burglars trick their way into homes. Never let strangers in without checking ID. If someone claims to be from a utility or delivery company, call the company on an official number first — don’t use numbers they give you. If you feel threatened, call 999. Report suspicious activity to 101. #StaySafe
What is a distraction burglary?
A distraction burglary is when someone gains access to your home by tricking you — e.g. pretending to be a utility worker, delivery driver, charity collector, or claiming there’s an emergency. Often two people work together: one distracts you while the other enters or searches the property.
Common tactics
Fake IDs or uniforms.
“We need to check your boiler/pipe/electrics.”
Pretending to be from a delivery company with a parcel for a neighbour.
Asking to use your phone or toilet.
Causing a small disturbance (spill, noise) so you open the door and they slip in.
Claiming to need help (lost, injured) to get you to open the door.
Keep yourself safe — top tips
1. Always check ID properly. Ask for ID and check it through a closed door or letterbox. If in doubt, say no.
2. Call the company back. Use an official number from a bill or the company website — don’t use a number the caller gives you.
3. Use a door chain/spyhole. Keep the chain on while speaking and never fully open the door to strangers.
4. Don’t be rushed or pressured. Legitimate workers will wait or come back with appointment confirmation.
5. Keep keys and valuables out of sight. Lock doors even when you’re at home.
6. Be wary of distractions inside the house. If someone distracts you at the door, ask them to leave — check the house before answering.
7. If you’re vulnerable, arrange a buddy. Ask a trusted neighbour or family member to sit with you when tradespeople call.
8. Record details. If something feels wrong, note vehicle registration, descriptions, time and direction of travel.
9. Trust your instincts. If it feels wrong, don’t open the door — call 101 or 999 if you feel threatened. | |
