Police Scotland have seen an increase in vehicle thefts across Scotland in recent months using the 'relay method'. Many of us may not know what this means so they have kindly provided the information below in relation to this and what we can do to try and combat it.
Tips to help prevent keyless car theft
Even if your vehicle isn’t on the top list of stolen vehicles, we should all be taking precautions to protect our vehicles. If you’re looking for advice on how to limit the chances of your vehicle being a target of relay attacks, here are some tips to consider:
🚗Parking: At home, if possible, park your car in a secured garage. Block your car between your garage and a second less desired vehicle. When out and about try to use ParkMark™ Car Parks.
📹Add additional security: Installing anti-theft devices can deter thieves. Options include steering wheel locks, dash cams, ghost immobilisers or install a tracker. Consider layering up for the best protection.
Motion detection lights and surveillance: Consider installing lights that are activated by motion and adding CCTV cameras or a ring doorbell outside your home which covers the area where the vehicle is parked.
🗝Know how your keys work: Some keys offer different levels of security depending on how many times the lock button is pressed. Check with your vehicle’s instruction manual for further details.
Key upgrades: Some vehicle manufacturers like Land Rover and Ford offer an option to upgrade the key technology and there are options such as Smart Keyless Protector, who have developed an aftermarket solution which can be added to your key. This technology ‘puts the key to sleep’ after 3 minutes stationary and will not send the signal whilst in this mode that can be intercepted by thieves.
Use a Faraday bag or RFID pouches: RFID (Radio-Frequency Identification) are designed with metal mesh to block a key fob from sending or receiving radio signals. Storing your keys away from the front door and in a metal box is also worth considering. Some fobs also allow you to turn off the wireless signal.
👛💻Keep valuables safe: Never leave valuable items in your vehicle, such as your wallet, laptop, or personal documents.
