Online dating and social media can be a great way to meet new people. But sadly scammers are also using these platforms to take advantage of kind, trusting individuals.

Romance fraud happens when someone pretends to be in a relationship with you - just to get your money.

They'll often:

Claim to live or work overseas
Make excuses to avoid meeting in person
Build trust over weeks or months
Create a fake emergency and ask for money.

What to do

Be cautious with people you've only met online
Don't send money or personal info to someone you haven't met
Speak to a friend or family member if something doesn't feel right
Report any suspicious behaviour to the police or Action Fraud.
