Your Weekly Bablake Update
Weekly Update from your local Bablake NPT
Dear Members
Here’s your weekly update from myself and the rest of the team.
What’s Been Happening
Burglaries There have been two attempted residential burglaries reported on THURLESTONE ROAD and OVERSLADE CRESCENT and three burglaries on HOLLOWAY FIELDS, HALFORD LANE AND BENNETTS ROAD SOUTH. Offender(s) have gained access via the back or the side of the properties. These elevations are more vulnerable than the front as they offer more privacy to an intruder. To reduce risk please consider the following at your home:
Barriers - such as rear fences and walls, are they high enough? Fixing trellis on top adds height and makes it difficult in climbing.
Defensive planting - use thorny shrubs such as pyracantha, berberis and roses or dense shrubs. Intruders dislike this as they can hurt themselves on thorny plants or get clothing caught (potentially leaving DNA). Also battling through branches, it is hard to move quickly and quietly through them, therefore increasing the chances of getting caught!
Gravel paths and driveways – these can be a deterrent as it makes a noise when walked on alerting you or neighbours to movement.
Side gates – is the gate sturdy? To reinforce, affix metal brackets or cross bars which could prevent someone forcing entry. As a part of regular maintenance inspect locks and hinges for rust, wear and looseness. Most important, keep the gate locked. Don’t forget about your outdoor building security too.
Implements – scan around your garden for anything lying around that could be used to break in such as tools, landscaping materials and even garden ornaments.
Lighting – cover entry points and blind spots in the garden, although please ensure that it will not disturb any neighbours.
Cannabis Factory On Saturday we were alerted to a smashed window at a property off BEAKE AVENUE. When officers arrived, all was not as it seemed, the property was found to be a cannabis factory. Factories can be a target for other criminals due to the high value of illegal drugs and growing equipment within. This factory was found to be a substantial grow in four rooms and the attic. Items were seized as part of the investigation and plants and equipment destroyed.
Operation Snap Whether out on patrol or at residents’ meetings, dangerous driving is often raised. We tackle this through enforcement such as traffic stops, vehicle seizures and carrying out regular operations with our Traffic Officers, DVLA and other agencies.
This week your officers seized a vehicle that failed to stop. The vehicle was located where an amount of cannabis and cash was found. Enquiries are being made to find the driver. Another driver had his wheels taken away as he had no licence and no insurance. Two learners have also had their vehicles seized and been reported. The first learner had no supervising passenger accompanying them (to supervise you must be at least 21 years old, hold a full driving licence for the type of vehicle being driven (manual or automatic) and have had that licence for three years). The second not only had no supervisor, but no L plates displayed front and rear and invalid insurance.
You can also help by reporting dangerous or careless driving to us through Operation Snap which is a countrywide initiative. Simply submit dash cam, helmet cam or mobile footage to us where our specially trained officers will review and if appropriate prosecute the driver or give them a driving improvement course. There are some criteria which you need to be aware before sending - www.westmidlands.police.uk/police-forces/west-midlands-police/areas/campaigns/campaigns/operation-snap/
Awareness We have been made aware of possible door to door cold calling off ROTHERHAM ROAD. Salespeople, charities, rouge traders and scammers often do this. If you are not expecting a visitor please do not fully open your door, use a door chain and speak through or use a window. Don't be afraid of saying no and shutting the door, be polite and firm. Never share personal or financial information at the door and above all, don't let them into your home, “IF IN DOUBT KEEP THEM OUT”.
If you have been visited by a cold caller and they seem aggressive or suspicious call 101 or if you feel threatened 999. Rouge traders and scammers can also be reported to Trading Standards via Citizens Advice and Action Fraud.
Until next week Stay safe everyone.
