Parents : Lets talk safety. |

SUBJECT: PARENTS: LET’S TALK SAFETY
As your local Policing team, we’re encouraging all parents and guardians to have open, honest conversations with their children about the real dangers they may face in our community.
🧠 Why These Talks Matter?
Young people are often exposed to risky influences – whether through peers, social media, or curiosity. A simple conversation at home can be the first line of defence in helping them make safe, informed choices.
💊 Drugs
- Talk about the risks of experimenting with drugs – even “just once.” - Explain how peer pressure works and how to say no confidently. - Highlight the long-term impact on health, education, and future opportunities. - Be aware of slang terms and signs of drug use.
🔪 Weapons
- Carrying a weapon doesn’t offer protection – it increases danger. - Possession of a weapon, even without intent to use, is a serious criminal offence. - Discuss the emotional and legal consequences of violence.
🚫 Trespassing
- Entering private or restricted property can lead to injury or arrest. - Abandoned buildings, railways, and construction sites are not playgrounds. - Respect for boundaries is part of respecting the community.
🗣️ Tips for Starting the Conversation
- Choose a calm, private moment – not during conflict. - Ask open-ended questions like: - Listen without judgment – make it safe for them to be honest. - Reassure them that they can always come to you or a trusted adult.
🛠️ Support & Resources
- If you need help or advice, you’re not alone. Here are some places to start: Talk to Frank – www.talktofrank.com – confidential drug advice. Fearless (Crimestoppers Youth Service) – www.fearless.org – report crime anonymously. NSPCC – www.nspcc.org.uk – support for parents and children. School – speak to your child’s school about your concerns.
Let’s work together to guide our young people away from harm and toward a safer future.
