Good Afternoon Resident BOGUS CALLERS Most people who call at your home will be genuine, but sometimes people call with the intention of tricking their way into your property to steal money or valuables. These people are known as Bogus Callers or Distraction Burglars. Bogus workmen may say that they need to come into your property to check something or make urgent repairs, others may offer to do gardening, tarmac your driveway, painting and decorating. They will give you a price for the work to be done; however will ask for more money half way through the job explaining it was a bigger job than they thought. Some will ask for money up front and then walk away once the payment has been completed without carrying out the work. They may even offer to drive you to a bank machine to get the money out, putting pressure on you. ADVICE Before answering the door to anyone make sure they are genuine. - Stop and think ‘am I expecting anybody?
- Does anyone have an appointment with you?
- Look through a window or spy hole if you have one to see if you recognise the caller
