Spiking is a serious crime with serious consequences.
This week we’re raising awareness of not only the consequences victims may face, but also highlighting the serious consequences perpetrators can also face.
Not only does spiking cause victims to experience severe symptoms, it can also leave them vulnerable to other crimes such as sexual assault and rape.
The week of intensification is a chance to put a spotlight on the issue, raise awareness of and for Police to work with partners to help prevent spiking incidents happening.
This includes visits to night time venues across East Sussex from our licensing team officers, alongside new in-house literature and posters being made available for both staff and venue go-oers to learn of the symptoms and where further support can be found.
Would you know the signs to spot in a potential spiking?
Signs of spiking in drinks:
Not all drinks change when spiked, but there are some signs that your DRINK may have been spiked and they might be:
-Excessive bubbles -Foggy appearance -Sinking ice -Change in colour
Possible indicators for spiking through vapes:
-Unusual marks or scratches on the device -Mismatched parts -Removed pod -Discoloured liquid -Off flavours
Symptoms of spiking can include dizziness, confusion, vomiting, fatigue, memory loss and, for spiked vapes, shortness of breath and coughing.
Knowing the signs could help save a life, act quick and tell venue staff, security or the police if you think you or someone you're with may have been spiked. Your safety and wellbeing matters!
PCSO Jackson attended the Uckfield Community Wellbeing Event at the Civic Centre today, the 18th September.
Hosted by the Uckfield Ageing Well Forum, the event featured interactive information stalls, live music, and fun games all focused on promoting wellbeing and a healthy lifestyle.
Attendees received valuable advice and leaflets covering important topics like scams, security, spiking, and much more.
It was a fantastic opportunity to connect with the community and support everyone’s safety and wellbeing! Out and about last week 🫖 Last Friday (12th September), officers from your Wealden Neighbourhood Policing Team joined residents and volunteers at Rotherfield St Martin Centre (RSM), as part of our continued commitment to local policing engagement events in your towns and villages.
PCSO Amy was on hand during the morning to speak to attendees on a number of topics, including on any recently reported crimes in the village, and to raise awareness of scams and frauds doing the rounds, as well as answer any questions residents had about local police in the area.
A great chance for local officers and residents to catch up over a lovely cup of tea and a delicious toastie on ‘toastie club’ day, thank you again Rotherfield St Martin for having us along, we’ll see you soon!
The centre, which is open every weekday from 9-5, is there for people to drop in, have coffee or cake, borrow books from the library, or take part in one of the many different clubs and activities on offer – find out more about RSM online or on their Facebook page.
Our next Police drop in at the RSM centre is on the 24th November 14:30-16:00.
Don't forget our property marking event in Heathfield, tomorrow!
Following the success of our last event, we are welcoming the public to another demonstration on how to use the Selecta DNA kits.
The kits are designed to reduce theft by coding valuable possessions with unique synthetic DNA, and use warning labels to alert criminals that the property is protected.
Want to grab a kit and find out more? Come and see us!
