🚨Thieves are targeting your vehicles – Stay Vigilant 🚨 As the nights get darker, we are starting to see a number of thefts from motor vehicles and vehicle thefts via relay attacks in the area. Many new cars now have keyless entry systems, or can have them added as an upgrade. This allows the driver to open and start the car without using a button or turning a key so long as the fob is nearby. Thieves are exploiting this, using technology to hack into your car’s computer, meaning they don’t even need a key-fob to enter or start the vehicle and can drive it away in a matter of minutes. There are simple steps you can take to protect your vehicle and belongings. Always lock your vehicle - Even if you're stepping away for just a moment, lock your car. Criminals often target vehicles with wing mirrors left out, indicating they’re unlocked. If your vehicle manufacturer has an app be sure to double check if your vehicle is locked on there.Close windows and sunroof - Cracked windows invite “fishing” – where thieves reach in or use tools to grab items or unlock doors.Secure your number plates - Use tamper-resistant screws to prevent thieves from stealing and misusing your plates. Ask your local neighbourhood officer for a set of these.Secure roof racks and trailers - Use cable locks or padlocks for roof racks, tool chests, and top boxes – don’t leave valuables in them. Ladders, tools, and screwdrivers left unattended can be used to access your vehicle or home.Keep valuables out of sight - Remove items like phones, wallets, sunglasses, gift bags and cash. Keep your parcel shelf in the boot so bags can be hidden.Tool theft from vans - Mark tools with your name/company and store them in lockable cabinets.
