Emergency Alert Test |
||
On Sunday 7 September there will be a UK emergency test alert at 3pm.
The Emergency Alerts system is used to warn if there’s a danger to life nearby, including extreme weather.
During the test your mobile phone or tablet may:
make a loud siren-like sound, even if it’s set on silent vibrate read out the alert
The sound and vibration will last for about 10 seconds. You will not need to do anything to turn it off. Alerts are based on the device’s current location - not where someone lives or works. You do not need to turn on location services to receive alerts.
Regular testing ensures the system is functioning correctly, should it need to be used in a life-threatening emergency. The Emergency Alerts system is an important tool for reaching the public in emergency situations. However, for those who need it, information on how to opt out is available on gov.uk/alerts. You can also learn about how to prepare for an emergency at gov.uk/prepare.
Our advice to people driving or riding when the alert is sent is to not read or otherwise respond. They should not attempt to pick up the mobile phone and deal with the message.
If you are in a public facing role, such as a neighbourhood officer or work in a contact centre, you may be asked about the launch. If this is the case please direct people to the Go
The alert will sound on work phones. If for operational reasons you need to turn off the alert this is how you do it:
Turning off the alert on Apple On an iPhone, go into settings, open notifications, and scroll down to the bottom and disable the Extreme and Severe Alerts option. This is done by tapping the green sliders and turning them grey.
Turning off the alert on an Android On an Android phone, simply search your settings for emergency alerts using the search icon. From the results, turn off severe and emergency alerts. This will mean that there will be no noise from the phones on the day. | ||
