1. What is Hate Crime?A hate crime is any criminal offence where the victim, or anyone else, believes they were targeted because of prejudice or hostility towards one or more of the following: Race or ethnicityReligion or beliefDisabilitySexual orientationTransgender identityThis includes verbal abuse, threats, harassment, assault, damage to property, and online abuse.
2. What is a Hate Incident?A hate incident is any non‑crime incident perceived by the victim (or anyone else) to be motivated by prejudice or hostility based on the same five categories above. While it may not be a criminal offence, it can still cause significant harm and may escalate if not addressed.
3. Why Reporting MattersHelps us protect you and others from further harm.Allows us to identify patterns and target problem areas.Ensures victims can access specialist support.Sends a clear message that hate will not be tolerated in Staffordshire.
4. How to ReportIn an emergency – Call 999 immediately.Non‑emergency – Call 101 or use the Staffordshire Police online reporting form.Online – Report via the True Vision hate crime reporting site.Third‑party reporting – You can speak to a trusted organisation who will pass details to us on your behalf.
5. Local Support in StaffordshireYou do not have to report to the police to get help.
