Stoneygate Ward Newsletter

Welcome to my monthly update for the residents and communities of the Stoneygate Ward Neighbourhood Policing Area East Leicester. This newsletter will be circulated on a regular basis and will provide an insight into what is happening at the NPA.

Particular areas of concern include Abingdon Road (large numbers of young people gathering but numbers reducing), St James Rd and Evington Rd (street drinking), Onslow Park, picked up from patch walks with multi-agencies, patrols, and Cllr meetings

Drug dealing (Abingdon Rd, Evington Footway, St James Rd), associated noise and accessing communal blocks (St Albans), littering of drugs packaging in open areas (Abingdon Road, Onslow Park) and Lincoln Street

Road Safety, parking and Speeding. In particular, zig zag parking on Evington Road, junction blocking off this main strip, and speeding on Key streets including Evington Lane and Stoughton Drive North leading to Evington Road

Road Safety August 2025

It was brought to our attention that there persists issues of speeding and noise nuisance of high-spec vehicles, especially from the top of Evington Lane. It’s believed that high performance cars with loud exhausts are using the top end of the beat at a race track. We encourage such motorists to be more respectful in the neighbourhood. Section 59 notices are our means to deal with anti-social driving. If you are given two notices your vehicle can be seized. We are putting plans together for OP SYPHON 2 and will instigate speeding operations. This will be the second part to the road safety initiative orchestrated by PS Hall that the beat team have worked jointly on.

To assist with concerns in the area, PC Woolley has arranged a street meeting on Monday 1st September at the junction of Kingsway Road and Highway Road. This will be from 1830 hrs to 1930 hrs. Please come and speak to us about local issues. We are aware there was a spike in vehicle crime on the Way Roads on 28th July. We have also had a spike since 24th August of five theft from motor vehicles (TFMV) and one stolen motor vehicle. Patrol plans are being put in place and it is suspected to be isolated to one main culprit.  

There have been concerns about St James Road being used as a cut through to Beckingham Road also to avoid Mayfield roundabout.

I would like to thank the residents that attended Mr Shockat Adam MP’s local crime summit on 22nd August at Dashwood Hall.

The meeting was attended by 23 people and included Evington Rd Neighbourhood Association, South Highfields Neighbourhood Association, a representative from the Leicester Trading Association, the Abingdon Rd NHW scheme, the manager of Action Homeless, and residents from St James Rd, Ashfield Road, and Evington Lane.

A whole range of issues were discussed, and PS Brown presented crime figures for the year. These have been shared with Mr Adam’s team to distribute. St James Road has emerged as a key location. The Police were praised for doing a ‘great job’ in the area by a local resident but needed more support due to the shift in the street towards Houses of Multiple Occupancy (HMOs) and supported living locations. Within a week of the community meeting, we have already had joint meetings with the Council’s CRASBU team and the managers of Alpha Housing and Action Homeless. We are also building on work with SERCO, Immigration, and probation services.

Drugs August 2025

On 22nd August, PCSO Trantom and PS Brown attended the unveiling of a ward-funded defibrillator machine on the side of PEARL’s pharmacy (Halsbury Street) by the Lord Mayor Theresa Alldred and Shockat Adam MP. This was organised by Teej Patel of Evington Road Neighbourhood Association (ERNA) who is a highly experienced youth worker who volunteered as a consultant for the MKA youth project last winter. It was a really positive event!

We, as representatives of the local police, were thanked for helping make Evington Road safer and this is building on our concerted efforts to work with partners in the long-term. The hope is that two bleed kits (first aid equipment) will be installed on Evington Road soon. It reinforces our drive to tackle the symptoms of drug-related activity which can lead to violence. However, I was very pleased to present figures to Mr Adam MP’s crime summit and via PC Woolley at the recent Ward Meeting:

Comparing year August 2023-August 24 to year August 2024-August 2025, Crime for the whole beat has gone down 12%. With regards to Evington Road, there has been a 74% DECREASE in Cambridge Harm index (which we use to measure ‘harm’ based on lots of different factors). The number of crimes fell from 98 to 44 (over half decrease!) and only two of these were knife related. Another key location has been Abingdon Road which has experienced an 86% DECREASE in Cambridge Harm Index and fall of the number of offences from 67 to just 16 in the last year.

These figures represent a lot of hard work and joint partnership, with various agencies and Council departments. In particular, I would like to thank our Local Councillors for their support.

With regards to drugs, there are still reports of drug activity on Evington Footway and St James Road and the NPT do continue their pro-active patrols in the area. We know there has been an uplift in drug activity in South Highfields nearer the train station. We have stepped up patrols and two drugs search warrants are being sought.
