Prevention Advice:

  • Install and Test Smoke Alarms:

Fit smoke alarms on every level of your home and inside bedrooms. Test them monthly and change the batteries if they aren't working.

Keep hallways, stairs, and landings clear of any clutter that could block your escape.

  • Make an Escape Plan:

Create a fire escape plan with your household and practice it twice a year.

  • Be Careful with Heat Sources:

    • Cooking: Don't leave cooking unattended. Keep flammable materials like curtains and tea towels away from the stove.

    • Smoking: Never smoke in bed. Ensure cigarettes are completely out and disposed of properly.

    • Candles: Never leave lit candles unattended.

    • Check appliances and chargers for recalls and stop using recalled items immediately.

  • E-bikes and Scooters:

Do not store e-bikes and e-scooters in escape routes, hallways, or balconies, and avoid charging their batteries overnight in your home.

  • What to Do in a Fire

  • Alert Others: Warn everyone in your home about the fire.

  • Leave and Close Doors: As you leave, close all doors behind you to help contain the fire.

  • Crawl if There's Smoke: If there's a lot of smoke, crawl along the floor where the air is clearer.
