Rogue Traders - Remain Vigilant

Dear Resident,

We’re urging everyone in the Letchworth and Baldock area to remain vigilant following a recent report of a suspected rogue trader.

Thanks to a call from a concerned member of the public, officers quickly attended Howard Drive, Letchworth, where a male was found knocking on doors offering steam cleaning services. Officers challenged the individual and moved him out of the area. Local residents were spoken to and reassurance was given. The individuals involved have been reported to Trading Standards.

🚨 What to look out for:

  • Cold callers offering services like driveway cleaning, roofing, or gardening

  • High-pressure sales tactics or “today only” deals

  • Claims of leftover materials from nearby jobs

  • Discounts given whilst working in your area

  • Requests for cash up front or refusal to provide written quotes

  •

    ✅ How to stay safe:

  • Don’t open the door to unexpected callers

  • Never agree to work on the spot

  • Always have a written contract in place before work begins, with an agreed price and a clear breakdown of what the work includes

  • Look out for elderly or vulnerable neighbours—check in if you see someone at their door

  • Keep valuables out of sight, especially near doors and windows

  • Never allow strangers into your home, even if they appear friendly or offer help

  • Consider fitting a door chain or spyhole so you can speak to callers without fully opening the door

  •

    📢 Report suspicious activity:

  • Online: www.herts.police.uk

  • Call 101 for non-emergencies

  • Call 999 if a crime is in progress or someone is at risk

  •

  • 📨 You can also report rogue traders to Hertfordshire Trading Standards here:
