Crime Prevention: Cold Calling

Cold calling still happens. A lot of companies outsource these calls to contracted companies which may be legitimate, but you still need to be very cautious.

There is also a large industry of fraudsters pretending to be legitimate companies just to try and steal your data and/or funds.

Be very aware of the personal data you are giving out on the telephone. You can set up password security on your account and agree a verbal password with the company to read to you to confirm that they are legitimate.

Companies like Microsoft will not call you, they will certainly not ask you to install software.

Scammers may ask to install remote desktop control software on the device. If this is done, they can gain access to your whole computer and try and access your bank accounts. Do not let any company install software on your devices.

If you are receiving large amount of scam calls, consider speaking with your phone provider to discuss options to minimise scam calls.
