GOOD NEWS STORY - Dangerous dogs Concern Update

I wanted to provide an update regarding Dangerous dogs, which people around this area have highlighted as an issue of concern on the priority survey.

In September 2024 and over the course of 19 days a member of the public allowed his ‘pack’ of 8 Cane Corso dogs to attack 9 victims on the Canal Towpath with little to no effort to prevent offences occurring. Our very own officer PC Brett done a fantastic job of collating all of the offences and collecting substantial evidence from all the victims, presenting the court with a detailed case file. The evidence was so overwhelming that the accused pled guilty at court to all 9 offences. Specialist officers from the MO7 Taskforce attended court to making sure the court had appropriate advice for all the dogs cases being heard. As the defendant had surrendered the dogs to police prior to the court hearing no orders were sought for the dogs however the defendant was given a 10 year ban from owning dogs and given a 36 weeks custodial sentence.

The Edmonton Green Team are dedicated to tackeling crime on the ward and this highlight a fantastic result for all the victims in this case.

It’s an offence to let a dog be dangerously out of control whether that’s in public or private.

A dog is considered to be out of control if it:

  • injures someone
  • makes someone worried that it might injure them

A court could also decide that your dog is dangerously out of control if:

  • it attacks someone’s animal
  • the owner of an animal thinks they could be injured if they tried to stop your dog attacking their animal

In the UK, it's against the law to own certain types of dogs and this is dependent on what it looks like, rather than its breed or name.

If you see a dog loose or if you think someone has and/or is breeding banned dogs, please report this online. If the dog seems to be out of control, let us know by calling 101.
