Knife Amnesty Bin

Dear Resident,

Unacceptable Knife Donation to Leigh Charity Shop Prompts Safety Reminder

Leigh, Greater Manchester – 28 August 2025
A local charity shop in Leigh recently received an anonymous donation that included a brand-new gardening knife/trowel in a leather sheath, still in its original packaging. While the gesture may have been well-intentioned, it highlights an important issue: charity shops are not permitted to accept knives or similar bladed items under any circumstances.

Greater Manchester Police (GMP) is reminding the public that there are safe and appropriate ways to dispose of unwanted knives and bladed tools:

  • Knife Amnesty Bin: Located on Brown Street South, near the Spinning Gate Car Park, this bin allows for anonymous and safe disposal.

  • Police Stations: Items can be handed in at any local police station.

  • Home Collection: Residents can call 101 or use GMP Livechat to request a collection from their home. A Police Community Support Officer or Police Officer will attend to safely retrieve the item.

  • GMP urges residents to use these channels to help keep the community safe and prevent potentially dangerous items from entering inappropriate circulation.

To access GMP Livechat, visit: Contact us | Greater Manchester Police

    Thanks, Take Care!
