Cycle security

Over the weekend, officers from the Warrington West Beat Team arrested a male in connection with a cycle theft in July in the Chapelford area.

He was also arrested for attempt theft of a bike and going equipped to steal, he will appear in court in September for all 3 offences.

The below cycle security advice will help to keep you and your bike safe when at home and out and about.

In Warrington, cyclists can protect their bikes by using high-quality locks, registering their cycles on a national database like BikeRegister, and using secure, designated parking spots

. For extra security, the town offers a secure cycle hub in the centre and a newly opened cycle station.

Security practices and advice

Locking your bike

  • Use two locks: Police recommend using two different types of locks to deter thieves who may specialize in a single type of tool.

  • Invest in a D-lock: A strong,

    Sold Secure Gold-rated D-lock

is a much more secure primary lock than a cable lock, which can be cut in seconds.

  • Lock correctly: Secure your bike's frame and both wheels to an immovable object, like a dedicated cycle stand. Ensure the lock is positioned tightly and off the ground to prevent a thief from smashing it with a hammer.

  • Protect removable parts: Secure easily removable parts like wheels and saddles with locking nuts or skewers, or take them with you.

  • Registering and marking your bike

  • Use BikeRegister: This is the UK's national cycle database, which all police forces can access. Registering your bike's frame number and photos greatly increases your chances of getting it back if it is stolen and recovered.

  • Get security marked: Warrington Police and BikeRegister offer security marking kits that apply a permanent, unique code to your bike. A visible security sticker acts as a strong deterrent.

  • Choosing where to park

  • At home: Many thefts occur from sheds and garages. Always lock your bike to a ground or wall anchor, even when it's in a locked shed.

  • In public: Park your bike in a busy, well-lit area with CCTV coverage. In Warrington, police have noted an increase in thefts in the town centre and advise cyclists to use the most secure facilities available.

  • Warrington-specific locations: Consider using the secure and monitored storage at the

    Warrington Cycle Hub

    or the

    new Cycle Station

    in the town centre.

  • Keeping records

  • Record details: Make a note of your bike's make, model, colour, size, and frame number, which is usually found under the bottom bracket.

  • Take photos: Take clear photos of your bike and its distinguishing features.

  • Keep receipts: Store receipts for your bike and any accessories you've purchased.

  • Insurance and reporting theft

  • Consider insurance: You can insure your bike against theft and damage, either through your home insurance or a separate policy. Be sure to check the locking requirements, which often specify a Sold Secure-rated lock.

  • Report a stolen bike immediately: If your bike is stolen, report it to the police by calling 101 and update the status on the database where you registered it
