Attempted Theft From Person - Mobile Phone

Dear Resident,

The following incident occurred on Sunday 24th August 2025 at approximately 05:25am whilst victim was  travelling on a N87 bus to their home in New Malden following a night out in Kingston town centre. Female victim was alone and sat on the ground floor at the back of bus looking at her phone and was very drowsy. An unidentified male has approached victim and snatched her phone out of hand. Victim has grabbed her mobile phone back and shouted at suspect  who has backed off. Victim has got off the bus at her stop and suspect has remained on bus.  This incident is still currently being investigated by the officer of the case to contact victim for reassurance and give crime prevention advice, request bus CCTV footage to identify the suspect.

If you've had a few too many alcohol drinks and need to get home, prioritize your safety by finding a trusted friend, a registered cab instead of getting on a bus alone. If a bus is your only option, stay on the lower deck for visibility, more visible to the bus driver and keep your phone charged, and be aware of your surroundings.

Before You Leave

  • Have a charged phone: to call for help or arrange a ride.

  • Know your route home: and have a backup plan.

  • Keep money aside: for a taxi or rideshare.

  • Let a friend know your plans: for getting home and share your journey details with them.

  •

If You Need to Use a Bus

  • Travel with a trusted friend: or wait until you can travel with someone you know.

  • Sit on the lower deck: to be closer to the exit and more visible to the bus driver.

  • Keep your phone in your hand: to be ready to call for help if needed.

  • Be alert to your surroundings: and trust your instincts.

  • Don't get on a bus if you're feeling unsafe: or overly vulnerable.

  • Other Options

  •  Licensed Cab Service

Book a licensed Cab  service, as it is a safer option than walking or taking a bus alone.

  • Walk Safely:

If you're walking, stick to well-lit, busy areas and avoid shortcuts through dark or isolated places.

  • Call for Help:

If you feel unsafe or are in a dangerous situation due to alcohol or any other reason, don't hesitate to call for help.
