Keeping our city safe

Good afternoon,

Yesterday, officers within the Canterbury Community Safety Unit completed an operation focused around violence against women and girls (VAWG). A mix of plain clothed officers and hi-visibility uniformed officers were present within the city centre of Canterbury, disrupting those showing unwanted behaviours towards women, as well as dealing with those causing anti-social behaviour to members of our community. Whilst VAWG is a constant priority for us in our usual day to day policing, this planned day of activity was an opportunity for us to develop intelligence and information on those who are out to cause distress and deal with them robustly.

Throughout the operation, many businesses were engaged with, members of the public were reassured and the following results were actioned:

1 x male arrested for assaulting a female and assaulting a constable.

1 x male arrested for recall to prison, his vehicle was also seized and he was reported for driving offences.

1 x Bicycle seized from a person who was purposely riding it at members of the public to cause alarm and distress.

1 x Person given a date for an interview for 2 shoplifting offences.

1 x male arrested for being drunk and disorderly who was accosting females in the High Street, ignoring their requests to leave them alone.

We will not tolerate any untoward/aggressive/unwanted behaviour towards females and will continue to tackle this issue. It is our aim to ensure Canterbury is a safe and positive place to live, visit and work. If anyone is subject to this kind of behaviour, whether it is walking home from work or visiting a pub/club in the city, we encourage you to report it to us so that we can assist you and deal with the matter appropriately.

Keep safe and have a good weekend,

Canterbury CSU
