Man jailed for three years after attacking victim with broken glass

A man who seriously injured another man after smashing a glass into his neck in Cannock has been jailed.

Robert Grainger, 41, of Wolverhampton, admitted wounding / inflicting grievous bodily harm without intent and was sentenced to three years’ imprisonment at Stafford Crown Court yesterday (Thursday 21 August).

It happened on 29 April outside the One Stop shop on Longford Road. Grainger and the victim, a man in his 30s, are seen on CCTV speaking to each other, resulting in a confrontation. Grainger, who was holding a glass, smashed it into the victim’s neck, causing a deep laceration. Grainger walked off after it happened, leaving the victim with significant injuries in the street.

The victim managed to walk to a family member’s house. They called 999 after seeing his injuries, where the victim then went into cardiac arrest and was rushed to hospital.

Thankfully, he has since been discharged from hospital, but suffered life-changing injuries. His left arm is now paralyzed and he is still undergoing medical treatment at various hospitals.

Detectives linked Grainger to the case after trawling CCTV and arrested him on 3 May. He had an injury to the hand that he was holding the glass in.

Chief Inspector Al Lyford, from the Cannock local policing team, said: “Officers worked diligently to investigate this violent attack and to apprehend Grainger as swiftly as possible.

“Violence of any kind has no place on our streets and we’re determined to take robust action against those responsible for harm in local communities.”
