Vehicles equipped with smart or passive (contactless) keys are vulnerable to a type of theft known as “Relay Theft.” Opportunistic thieves and organized criminal groups have access to electronic devices, key cloning tools, and other equipment that can be easily obtained to target such vehicles. Typically operating in pairs, these criminals focus on vulnerable and high-value vehicle models. They use cloning devices capable of capturing the signal emitted by the smart key, making the vehicle believe the key is present. This process can be completed in as little as 60 seconds, and for safety reasons, the vehicle’s engine will not shut off if the key is out of range. The risk period is highest overnight, especially if the vehicle is parked on your driveway or directly outside your home, where most relay thefts tend to occur. **Preventative Measures Against Relay Theft** - **Use a Faraday cage or pouch:** When not in use, whether at home, while out, or on holiday, store your keys in a secure Faraday pouch or box. These protective containers—sometimes called RFID signal blockers—prevent electronic devices from capturing the signal from your vehicle’s key. - **Avoid leaving keys near the front door:** Do not leave keys in hallways or near entry points, as thieves may exploit this to intercept signals through the letterbox. Keeping keys away from external doors reduces the risk of signal harvesting. - **Install a vehicle tracker:** A tracking system can significantly improve the chances of recovering your vehicle if stolen. Many systems activate immediately after theft, utilizing GPS and other technologies to monitor the vehicle’s location. Our members at SBD can recommend suitable systems for your vehicle type and provide professional installation. - **Use physical security devices:** Consider employing steering wheel locks, wheel clamps, or similar devices. These deterrents make quick theft more difficult and less appealing to modern car thieves seeking a swift getaway. - **Install CCTV system:** Installing CCTV cameras linked to your home’s monitoring system can serve as a deterrent and assist in identifying intruders. If you choose to install CCTV, ensure you review guidance from the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) regarding domestic surveillance systems. Remaining vigilant and adopting these security measures can help protect your vehicle from theft. | ||
