Local Priorities Fraud (e.g. bogus callers, courier fraud, cyber-crime) Message

I wanted to provide you with an update regarding Fraud (e.g. bogus callers, courier fraud, cyber-crime), which people around your area have highlighted as an issue of concern on the priority survey.

🚨 Public Awareness Notice – NPT Town Centres 🚨

We’ve received reports of individuals selling products in our town centres claiming to support health-related causes. While many fundraising efforts are genuine, we urge the public to remain vigilant before donating cash.

🔍 How to Check if a Charity is Legitimate:
• Use the official Charity Commission register to verify if an organisation is registered in England and Wales: gov.uk/find-charity-information
• Ask for identification and look for branded materials or QR codes linking to a verified website.
• Be cautious of emotional appeals without clear information or credentials.

🛍️ Street Trading vs. Pedlars – What’s the Difference in Wales?
• Street Traders operate from a fixed pitch and must hold a street trading licence issued by the local council
• Pedlars are mobile traders who sell goods on foot (often door-to-door or while walking through public areas) and must hold a pedlar’s certificate

📌 Important Notes:
• Trading without the correct licence or certificate is illegal and may be reported to local authorities.
• A pedlar’s certificate does not permit trading from a stall or fixed location.
• Councils may impose restrictions or refuse licences based on location, timing, or public safety

If you're unsure about a seller or fundraiser, please contact ….. for advice.

Let’s work together to keep our town centres safe, fair, and welcoming for everyone. 💙

People in the UK lost ÂŁ1.2bn to fraud in 2022, the equivalent of ÂŁ2,300 every minute, according to bank industry group UK Finance. It said around three million scams took place, with frauds involving payment cards being the most common.

Fraud is when trickery is used to gain a dishonest advantage, which is often financial, over another person. Cybercrime is any criminal act dealing with computers and networks.
