FRAUD ALERT – STAY SAFE ONLINE & AT YOUR DOORSTEP Sadly, across the nation we are seeing a rise in scams targeting people both online and in person. Please take extra care when making purchases, especially from unfamiliar websites or sellers. Avoid buying from door-to-door sellers – These individuals may not be legitimate, and you could end up with faulty goods, no goods at all, or worse, become a victim of fraud. If someone comes to your door trying to sell something, do not feel pressured to buy. Always ask for ID and verify their credentials. Online shopping tips: Only shop from trusted websites. Look for secure payment options (padlock symbol in the browser). Be cautious of deals that seem too good to be true... they often are just that.. too good to be true. Never share personal or banking details unless you're sure it's safe. As many of us often use Facebook marketplace as a platform to sell our unwanted items or buy ourselves a bargain please read the below tips: Meet in public places: Always arrange to meet in well-lit, busy areas—ideally during the day. Avoid sharing personal information: Never give out sensitive details like your address, phone number, or banking info. Legitimate buyers and sellers don’t need this. Use secure payment methods: Cash is safest for in-person exchanges. Avoid wire transfers or sending money before receiving the item. Trust your instincts: If something feels off—like a seller pushing for personal info or rushing the deal—it’s okay to walk away. Check profiles and reviews: Look at the person’s Marketplace history and ratings if available. A well-established profile can offer more peace of mind.
Watch out for payment scams: If a seller claims your payment didn’t go through and asks for more money, don’t send anything else until you’ve: Checked your banking app or online banking Reviewed your transaction history Confirmed with your bank directly if needed! If you’re unsure or feel something isn’t right, trust your instincts and report it. You can contact your local police or Action Fraud at https://www.actionfraud.police.uk. Feel free to share this post to help protect your friends and family.
