Be Fire-Aware at Home and in the Garden
Take care when mowing: Striking a stone with a lawnmower or strimmer can create a spark. In dry grass, that’s all it takes to ignite a fire. Always clear the area of stones and debris before mowing. Use barbecues safely: Never use a barbecue on dry grass or near fences, sheds, or trees. Make sure it is fully extinguished before you leave it unattended. Cigarette safety: Always extinguish cigarettes properly, and never flick them into gardens, plant pots, or from car windows. Protecting Your Home Tidy up the garden: Remove dry leaves, grass cuttings, and dead plants. These can act as fuel for fires. Create a buffer zone: Keep a clear area around your home — trim back overgrown bushes, and don’t stack wood or store fuel close to the house. If You Spot a Fire - Call 999 immediately - Provide a clear location — including your postcode or a What3Words reference if available - Keep people and pets at a safe distance - Don’t try to tackle large fires yourself — wait for the fire service to arrive | ||||
