Local Priorities Fraud (for example, bogus callers, courier fraud, cyber crime) Concern Update

I wanted to provide you with an update regarding Fraud (for example, bogus callers, courier fraud, cyber crime), which people around your area have highlighted as an issue of concern on the priority survey.

Recently we have seen an increase of reports from victims in relation to Courier Fraud.
This week in Dover and Broadstairs we have seen a consistent variant to the previous examples we have shared.

The victim receives a phone call from someone claiming to be from their bank, informing them that their bank card has been compromised and a replacement will be delivered. During the call, the victim is asked to provide sensitive information, including their card number and PIN. Shortly afterwards, a male or female posing as a bank representative arrives at the victim’s home and collects the genuine card. The victim then discovers that unauthorised withdrawals have been made from their account.

Remember

Banks will NEVER ask for your PIN or send someone to collect your card.
Do not give personal or banking details over the phone.
Contact your Bank immediately, by calling 159.
Report suspicious activity immediately to 101 and report to Action Fraud at www.actionfraud.police.uk or call 0300 123 2040.

People in the UK lost £1.2bn to fraud in 2022, the equivalent of £2,300 every minute, according to bank industry group UK Finance. It said around three million scams took place, with frauds involving payment cards being the most common.

Fraud is when trickery is used to gain a dishonest advantage, which is often financial, over another person. Cybercrime is any criminal act dealing with computers and networks.

To report an incident of cybercrime or fraud and for further information visit the Action Fraud website at www.actionfraud.police.uk
