Dear Resident, Last week we received a call from a woman in Peterborough.
It was around 8.45am when she heard a knock at her front door.
It was an elderly man, who appeared to be in his 90s, standing barefoot on the doorstep.
He didn't seem to know who he was, where he was going, or where he lived. Concerned that he was vulnerable, the woman invited the man in to her home while she phoned us for assistance.
The man wasn't saying much, but saluted to her a few times as she explained that she was going to contact the police to try and get him home safely.
Luckily, when an officer arrived, he spotted some panicked looking people in the area, who turned out to be the man's family members, who were out searching for him.
In this instance, the man luckily had local family members who quickly noticed that he was missing, and was taken in and cared for by a kind member of the public.
We'd like to say thankyou to the woman who took the man into her home and reassured him while she phoned for help.
This scenario, sadly, is not uncommon. There are more than 10,000 people living in Cambridgeshire with dementia.
If you know someone living with dementia, we're continuing to highlight our Herbert Protocol form which can be filled out online.
It encourages family and friends to collate key information such as a physical description, familiar places, health details and a recent photo of a loved one with dementia that will help officers to find them if they go missing.
