Swimming In Open Waters

Hi Resident

Stay Out of Cold Water During Extremely Hot Weather

When it’s hot outside, it’s tempting to jump into a lake, river, or the sea to cool off. But that cold water could be much more dangerous than it seems.

Why It’s Risky:

  • Cold Water Shock: Even strong swimmers can suddenly gasp, panic, and lose control when entering water below 15°C (59°F). This can lead to drowning within seconds.
  • Your Body Isn’t Ready: Going from extreme heat into cold water is a major shock to your system. It can confuse your breathing, heart rate, and muscles—even if you’re healthy.
  • Hidden Dangers: Cold water may hide strong currents, steep drop-offs, or underwater hazards. These are harder to deal with if your body is in shock
