Update from Sgt Walsh - Saturday 5th July - Rochdale North and East Neighbourhood staff had a busy afternoon working alongside our Specialist Operations Branch who provided two off road bike officers and in addition two traffic officers in cars. We were also joined by a member of our Special Constabulary and community volunteers who gave up their time to assist us which is greatly appreciated. Two officers from Oldham District also joined the operation to cover the borders between the two districts which was also appreciated. There was little off road bike activity observed in the moorland and surrounding areas which is good news. The officers deployed were able to carry out lots of proactive work throughout the day with some really good results as follows - Male seen acting suspiciously in a vehicle at Catley Lane Head by PC Marvell. There was evidence of drug use and the vehicle had no insurance. The driver was stop searched and failed a roadside drug test for Cocaine and Cannabis, he was arrested for these offences and the car was seized.A male was spotted looking like he was waiting for a drugs drop on Cronkeyshaw Road. Officers observed a young male approaching him and this male ran off when challenged, he was detained on Sladen Street after a foot chase. Approximately 60 wraps of suspected class a drugs were recovered from next to where the male was detained. He has been arrested for Possession of Class A Drugs with Intent to Supply and investigations are ongoing. The other male, who is one of our prolific shoplifting offenders, and who carries out these offences so he can purchase drugs, was searched with a negative result. The suspected dealer didn't have any money with him when he was arrested which would suggest that we caught him at the beginning of his deliveries. This no doubt left some unhappy customers for the rest of the day! 4 x Fixed Penalty Notices issued for no seat belt.1 x Fixed Penalty Notice issued for none conforming number plate.Oldham officers seized two Surron e-bikes which are illegal to use in public places. As can be seen, although the operation is to focus on illegal off road bike activity, we will deal robustly with any type of crime or anti social behaviour we come across.
