+ London is a diverse city and the vast majority of residents and visitors treat one another with respect. Very sadly, certain sections of our communities are subjected to deplorable abuse and harassment. The Met does not tolerate any form of hate crime and is absolutely committed to prosecuting offenders. We take all reports of hate crime extremely seriously.
The Met Police remains committed to ensuring that all communities in London feel safe. We have dedicated LGBT+ Community Liaison Officers (CLOs) who are focused on building relationships between the police and the LGBT+ community. For more information about the work of these officers, visit our website: https://www.met.police.uk/police-forces/metropolitan-police/areas/about-us/about-the-met/lgbt-community-liaison-officers/
Detective Superintendent Amanda Mawhinney, from the South West Command, said: “This was an appalling and vicious attack which we are treating as a transphobic hate crime. The victim went through a terrifying ordeal. She was badly assaulted, subjected to vile transphobic comments and had her bag stolen. We are providing her with every support and will do everything we can to find the two suspects responsible.
“Our current enquiries are focussed on CCTV work in and around the area at the time of the incident and I would encourage anyone with information that could assist to please contact police.”
On Tuesday 1st July a male has been arrested, charged and remanded in custody to appear before court. The investigation remains ongoing and anyone with information is asked to call 101 quoting CAD 76/26June. To remain anonymous call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. | ||
