This afternoon officers from Bakewell Safer Neighbourhood Team have been to an address in Bakewell to issue a warning letter to the tenancy holder in relation to cannabis use in the address.
Following numerous complaints from members of the public in relation to a strong smell of cannabis coming from an address, a letter has been issued notifying the tenancy holder of their responsibilities in relation to what happens at the address. Along with the possession and use of cannabis being an offence, it also an offence to permit drug taking activity to take place at the address under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971.
A person commits an offence if, being the occupier or concerned in the management of any premises, he knowingly permits or suffers any of the following activities to take place on those premises, that is to say— (a)producing or attempting to produce a controlled drug in contravention of section 4(1) of this Act;
(b)supplying or attempting to supply a controlled drug to another in contravention of section 4(1) of this Act, or offering to supply a controlled drug to another in contravention of section 4(1);
(c)preparing opium for smoking;
(d)smoking cannabis, cannabis resin or prepared opium.
Allowing drugs use at an address can also affect your tenancy agreement and could be used as grounds for eviction.
