Good Afternoon Resident,As we have seen a massive increase in Anti-Social Behaviour around our city centre, West Midlands Police would like to advise people to please keep the following information in mind when visiting Wolverhampton City Centre, as we work to make it a safer and more inviting place to visit. Homelessness and rough sleeping is a large scale issue within Wolverhampton and together we can help people get the right care they need. Why We’re Urging Wolverhampton Residents Not to Give Money Directly to the HomelessSupport through Alternative Giving CIO insteadWest Midlands Police is committed to supporting some of the most vulnerable people in our communities — and that includes those experiencing homelessness in Wolverhampton. However, we are asking residents and visitors to consider a different approach when it comes to offering help. While giving money directly to someone sleeping rough may feel like the right thing to do in the moment, it may not always be the most effective or safest way to support them. In many cases, the money given — though well-intentioned — can unintentionally enable harmful cycles, including substance misuse and street begging that is often linked to exploitation or organised crime. Instead, we are encouraging members of the public to channel their generosity through a trusted local charity: Alternative Giving CIO.
Why Not Give Money Directly? Many people on the streets of Wolverhampton are in contact with local services and have offers of help. However, not everyone accepts support straight away, and direct financial donations can sometimes reduce the motivation for individuals to engage with those vital services. Our officers often see people in genuine need who struggle with addiction, mental health issues, or unsafe sleeping conditions. Cash handouts, though well-meaning, can delay access to longer-term support, shelter, and recovery. Moreover, organised begging gangs sometimes exploit vulnerable individuals to solicit money, where none of the funds go to the person seen on the street. By giving cash, you could be unintentionally supporting criminal networks rather than helping someone in need.
A Better Way to Help: Alternative Giving CIO Alternative Giving CIO is a Wolverhampton-based charitable initiative that works directly with outreach teams, housing providers, and support services to ensure donations go exactly where they’re most needed.
When you donate through Alternative Giving CIO, your money is used to: Provide hot meals, clothing, and essentials Fund emergency accommodation and supported housing Offer mental health and addiction support Help individuals move off the streets and into long-term recovery Every pound donated is accounted for and goes toward sustainable, meaningful change — not just a quick fix. How You Can Get Involved Donate online: Visit www.wolverhamptonchange.co.uk to make a one-off or regular donation. Use contactless donation points: Available across Wolverhampton city centre. Support local fundraising: Whether you’re a business, school or individual, there are many ways to raise funds for Alternative Giving CIO.
Working Together for a Safer, Kinder Wolverhampton Homelessness is complex. Tackling it requires compassion, but also coordinated, expert intervention. West Midlands Police works closely with Wolverhampton City Council, outreach teams, and charities like Alternative Giving CIO to ensure that every person has the opportunity to get the help they need — not just survive on the streets, but build a better future. By giving wisely, you are helping us create a safer, more supportive city for everyone. Thank you for your continued care and community spirit. West Midlands Police Serving with pride. Protecting with purpose.
